Redlands police say that two vehicles were involved in the hit-run death of a female pedestrian on Wednesday (September 17th). Both drivers had sped through a red light on Alabama Street, hitting the woman and fleeing the scene. Some evidence has been recovered. (INT) The Chino Valley Fire District put a new Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team into service Wednesday (September 17th). The specialized unit is designed to improve emergency response in some of the Fire District’s most remote and difficult-to-access areas. The REMS team responds from Fire Station 62 in Chino Hills. (INT) An Eastvale woman has been charged with murder in a deadly fentanyl and xylazine poisoning case. Angelina Judena Ortega, 25, is suspected of distributing the deadly combination to Kailey Pearson, 19, last January in Eastvale. (INT) Serial rapist Sulton William White has been sentenced to three, consecutive life prison terms for a wave of sexual offenses in San Bernardino and three other cities. White was convicted of rape and forced oral copulation and of firearm/deadly weapon allegations. (INT) A former USPS letter carrier from Orange County was sentenced Monday (September 8th) to 66 months in federal prison for stealing from the mail more than $10 million in Treasury and other checks over a four-year span. Rashad Deon Stolden, 34, of Huntington Beach, was also ordered to pay 1-point-6 million dollars in restitution. (INT) The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which features the world’s largest rotating tram car, is undergoing it annual maintenance and will be shut down until October 13th. Switzerland-based technicians are servicing the controls system. Annual state-permit testing will also be conducted. (INT) Construction is underway on Phase 2B of the Murrieta Creek Flood Control, Environmental Restoration, and Recreation Project. It will extend another mile from Rancho California Road to Via Montezuma to cover the lower two miles of the authorized 7.5-mile corridor. The project construction cost is $44 million. (INT) The City of Riverside will save more than $21 million over the next 15 years because of the recent refinancing of $139 million in sewer revenue bonds. City officials offered assurances that the sewer system remains in excellent condition. (INT) Dust pollution is a growing concern in California due to human activities as well as some natural processes, like drought, which are becoming more intense in a changing climate. The UC Dust Initiative aims to provide a comprehensive summary of dust science in California and a guide to adaptation and mitigation efforts. One of the goals of the dust initiative is to develop an early-warning system, UC says. (INT) A Riverside County jury has handed down a second-degree murder conviction for the fentanyl-delated death of a man in his home in 2020. Quinn Aaron McKellips had offered to sell and then supplied three pills, or ‘supers’, to the victim. (INT) A 5-hour long stand-off involving San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies and an elderly man threatening suicide ended with his death. Anthony Benigno, 78, had been seated inside a vehicle at Helendale (near Victorville) when he pointed a handgun at deputies. Benigno was shot and died at the scene on Strawberry Lane on Monday in a church parking lot. (September 15th). (INT) Barely 1-in-5 registered voters bothered to cast a ballot in the August 26th run-off election for State Assembly in Riverside County’s 63rd District. Natasha Johnson outpolled Democrat Chris Shoults 53% to 47% in the final certified count issued Friday (September 12th). (INT) A Texas truck driver has been charged in a 1993 Riverside County ‘cold case’ murder. Douglas Thomas’ DNA matched that found in the 1992 murder of a woman in Texas. Homicide detectives later interviewed Thomas about the slaying of a young mother whose body was found in Desert Center. Thomas is already serving a sentence for the Texas slaying and Riverside County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the Desert Center case. Thomas has pleaded not guilty. (INT) With unemployment above 5 percent, California is struggling with jobless claims. They are 3-point-6 percent higher than the week before and nearly 3 percent above last year at this time. (INT) More than 7 in 10 Riverside County public school students in grades 2–12 are eligible for up to $1,500 each in scholarship funds. Families can check their eligibility by visiting CalKIDS.org and entering the child’s 10-digit Statewide Student Identifier (SSID). (INT) California voters give strong support to the University of California and its 10 campuses, according to a new poll. The Institute of Governmental Studies found that two-thirds of voters agreed that the UC system helps students succeed. 71 percent said that its campuses produce important research that benefits communities. (INT) The Auen Foundation, a Coachella Valley-based private grant-making foundation, has pitched in $250,000 to help restore the historic Plaza Theater in Palm Springs. (INT) |
