An Eastvale woman has been charged with murder in a deadly fentanyl and xylazine poisoning case. Angelina Judena Ortega, 25, is suspected of distributing the deadly combination to Kailey Pearson, 19, last January in Eastvale. (INT) Banning police have located a red Cadillac involved in the hit-run death of a pedestrian. Two people have been questioned and released. The identity of the pedestrian Thursday night (September 11th) has not been publicly released. (INT) A Texas truck driver has been charged in a 1993 Riverside County ‘cold case’ murder. Douglas Thomas’ DNA matched that found in the 1992 murder of a woman in Texas. Homicide detectives later interviewed Thomas about the slaying of a young mother whose body was found in Desert Center. Thomas is already serving a sentence for the Texas slaying and Riverside County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the Desert Center case. Thomas has pleaded not guilty. (INT) A former USPS letter carrier from Orange County was sentenced Monday (September 8th) to 66 months in federal prison for stealing from the mail more than $10 million in Treasury and other checks over a four-year span. Rashad Deon Stolden, 34, of Huntington Beach, was also ordered to pay 1-point-6 million dollars in restitution. (INT) An Indio High School student has tested positive for tuberculosis (TB). The Riverside County Public Health (RUHS-PH) department reported Friday (September 5th) that efforts are underway to notify those who may have been exposed to the disease. The student is receiving treatment and expected to make a full recovery. (INT) The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which features the world’s largest rotating tram car, is undergoing it annual maintenance and will be shut down until October 13th. Switzerland-based technicians are servicing the controls system. Annual state-permit testing will also be conducted. (INT) Construction is underway on Phase 2B of the Murrieta Creek Flood Control, Environmental Restoration, and Recreation Project. It will extend another mile from Rancho California Road to Via Montezuma to cover the lower two miles of the authorized 7.5-mile corridor. The project construction cost is $44 million. (INT) Investigators say a San Bernardino man, accused of sexually assaulting a child in Highland, may have other victims. Guillermo Humberto Cascante, 57, is accused of six felonies. The initial victim was able to escape and report the incident. (INT) A 17-month project to extend an eastbound truck-climbing lane up the Crystal Springs grade on Interstate 10 is complete. The 3-mile project separates trucks from faster-moving traffic between Yucaipa and Calimesa. An existing median was paved shifting the three lanes inward, allowing the former outside lane to become the extended truck climbing lane. (INT) Dust pollution is a growing concern in California due to human activities as well as some natural processes, like drought, which are becoming more intense in a changing climate. The UC Dust Initiative aims to provide a comprehensive summary of dust science in California and a guide to adaptation and mitigation efforts. One of the goals of the dust initiative is to develop an early-warning system, UC says. (INT) Barely 1-in-5 registered voters bothered to cast a ballot in the August 26th run-off election for State Assembly in Riverside County’s 63rd District. Natasha Johnson outpolled Democrat Chris Shoults 53% to 47% in the final certified count issued Friday (September 12th). (INT) Serial rapist Sulton William White has been sentenced to three, consecutive life prison terms for a wave of sexual offenses in San Bernardino and three other cities. White was convicted of rape and forced oral copulation and of firearm/deadly weapon allegations. (INT) A Phelan landlord is dead and her renter has been accused of murder. Margaret Minier, 57, came under suspicion after the body of Mindy Kum, 72, was found on her property on Smoke Tree Road. Kum was last seen by her family while visiting Tustin earlier this month. (INT) The late Saturday night (September 6th) death of a man on a road near the Pechanga casino east of Temecula has turned into a case of murder. Sheriff’s investigators accuse a Vista Man of assaulting George Fresquez IV, a resident of Temecula, and leaving him dying on the Pechanga Parkway. Investigators identified 39-year-old Alex Leyva as the suspect in the assault and arrested him. (INT) With unemployment above 5 percent, California is struggling with jobless claims. They are 3-point-6 percent higher than the week before and nearly 3 percent above last year at this time. (INT) More than 7 in 10 Riverside County public school students in grades 2–12 are eligible for up to $1,500 each in scholarship funds. Families can check their eligibility by visiting CalKIDS.org and entering the child’s 10-digit Statewide Student Identifier (SSID). (INT) California voters give strong support to the University of California and its 10 campuses, according to a new poll. The Institute of Governmental Studies found that two-thirds of voters agreed that the UC system helps students succeed. 71 percent said that its campuses produce important research that benefits communities. (INT) The City of Riverside will save more than $21 million over the next 15 years because of the recent refinancing of $139 million in sewer revenue bonds. City officials offered assurances that the sewer system remains in excellent condition.
