San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus has ramped up patrols around the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. It’s in response to recent violence aimed at several Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities across the nation. Dicus says the measures taken by his staff are being taken out of an abundance of caution, and there is currently no direct threat to the public or the facility at Adelanto. (INT)

Authorities are trying to identify a man who perished when he was trapped in a burning San Bernardino home. First responders found the victim in a bedroom of the small home on Genevieve Street. He died enroute to a local hospital late Monday night (September 22nd). The cause of the fire was under investigation. (INT)

In Hemet, at least four people were shot, one fatally, during an early Tuesday morning (September 23rd) disturbance. Police found one of the victims dead in a vehicle enroute to a hospital. First responders went to the crime scene on Steiner Drive and are gathering evidence. (INT)

A staffer at a licensed residential treatment facility in San Jacinto is facing felony charges of inappropriate contact with juvenile residents under his care. Sheriff’s investigators allege that Antoine Christopher Sims, 31, had a pattern of predatory behavior. Sims was arrested September 18th in Winchester. (INT)

The Chino Valley Fire District put a new Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team into service Wednesday (September 17th). The specialized unit is designed to improve emergency response in some of the Fire District’s most remote and difficult-to-access areas. The REMS team responds from Fire Station 62 in Chino Hills. More than 7 in 10 Riverside County public school students in grades 2–12 are eligible for up to $1,500 each in scholarship funds. Families can check their eligibility by visiting CalKIDS.org and entering the child’s 10-digit Statewide Student Identifier (SSID). (INT)

California voters give strong support to the University of California and its 10 campuses, according to a new poll. The Institute of Governmental Studies found that two-thirds of voters agreed that the UC system helps students succeed. 71 percent said that its campuses produce important research that benefits communities. Kars-R-Us, Inc is facing restrictions on future fundraising activities. The California Attorney General’s office says that for 5-years Kars raised more than 45-million dollars, about one-third from California donors. $35 million went to Kars and not towards breast cancer screenings. Under the stipulated judgment, one of the operators, Michael Irwin, will be permanently banned from fundraising. (INT)

Riverside police are sorting out details of an attempted murder-suicide. It happened Tuesday (September 23rd) at a recycling business near the Riverside Municipal Airport. Police initially said a man shot a woman and then killed himself. Police said the suspect, The suspect, 53-year-old Ruben Zavala Negrete of Ontario, had recently been employed there. (INT)


A former Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was granted probation Tuesday (September 23rd) for killing the father of his girlfriend’s children. In spite of the objections of prosecutors and several pleas from the slain man’s family, Oscar Rodriguez was sentenced by an Indio judge to a one-year jail term and 10 years of probation supervision. Rodriguez was given credit for 194 days of jail custody on his conviction of voluntary manslaughter. (INT)


The City of Riverside invites the community to learn more about the proposed Riverside Sports Complex & Entertainment District at a community meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Springbrook Clubhouse. The City is negotiating to revitalize the 56-acre former Ab Brown Sports Complex site, which has been vacant since 2018. (INT)

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which features the world’s largest rotating tram car, is undergoing it annual maintenance and will be shut down until October 13th. Switzerland-based technicians are servicing the controls system. Annual state-permit testing will also be conducted. (INT)

Construction is underway on Phase 2B of the Murrieta Creek Flood Control, Environmental Restoration, and Recreation Project. It will extend another mile from Rancho California Road to Via Montezuma to cover the lower two miles of the authorized 7.5-mile corridor. The project construction cost is $44 million. (INT)

The City of Riverside will save more than $21 million over the next 15 years because of the recent refinancing of $139 million in sewer revenue bonds. City officials offered assurances that the sewer system remains in excellent condition. (INT)

Dust pollution is a growing concern in California due to human activities as well as some natural processes, like drought, which are becoming more intense in a changing climate. The UC Dust Initiative aims to provide a comprehensive summary of dust science in California and a guide to adaptation and mitigation efforts.
