Missing police officer, hiking companions found safe
KINGS CANYON--A missing San Bernardino police officer and two backpacking companions are safe after a week-long ordeal in the Kings Canyon National Park in Fresno County.

Searchers had been looking for officer Lanier Rogers, 25, and brothers Jordan and Jake Zeman after family members reported them missing late Monday.

Park Service spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said the crew of a search helicopter was attracted by smoke from a ledge near Cedar Grove about noon Thursday.

"They investigated and discovered three men matching the description of our missing men close to the roaring river falls.”

Each was lowered by rope from the helicopter to a safe landing area. All appeared to be in good condition.

The trio was on a 65-mile hike that was to have taken five days. (INT)
