Will Afghan runoff make a difference?
KABUL--The presidential run-off election will be held November 7th between President Hamid Karzai and his main rival Abdullah Abdullah.
After allegations of fraud in August's elections, the Electoral Complaints Commission ordered that ballots from 210 polling stations be discounted. In order to prevent more irregularities, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said the UN is seeking to get more than half the top officials involved in Afghanistan's election replaced. Mr Ban told the BBC that 200 officials who had been complicit in fraud should go to ensure a run-off vote due next month was "transparent and credible". Two questions have yet to be answered. Will fraud be prevented this time? Will a second election bring stability to the country? (Source: BBC) Story Date: September 2, 2010
