New life for crime-ridden apartments SAN BERNARDINO--Rehabilitation is about to start on what was two of the city’s most crime-ridden apartment units.
The tenants have moved from the family units around 19th street and Sunrise Lane. The city’s Economic Development Agency wants to reduce blight and create ‘attractive and affordable housing options’. But, City Councilwoman Wendy McCammack has doubts based on past experience. “If appropriate tenants are not placed in those properties, they become like many others over time. Typically over 2 years, they look exactly like they did prior to the change of hands.” Ms. McCammack says her opposition stems from the amount of money being spent in that specific area “as opposed to spending that neighborhood stabilization money throughout the city helping homeowners who are about to lose their homes.” When completed, about 100 refurbished apartments will be up for rent.
