HOLLYWOOD--"Dear John" denied James Cameron's "Avatar" an eighth number 1 weekend.

The over-achieving romantic drama scored an estimated $32.4 million in opening domestic box office receipts during Super Bowl weekend. This comes just days after ‘Avatar’ received nine Oscar nominations.

"From Paris With Love," starring John Travolta and Jonathan Meyers, debuted in third place.
