Scientists study chances of earthquake 'migration'
ANZA – Seismologists are monitoring an increase in micro-quakes near here and the mountain community of Julian. More are being recorded since the Easter Sunday quake in northern Baja, but all have been too weak to be felt.

Dr. Kate Hutton at Cal Tech says making a connection can be elusive.

“Any earthquake relieves stress, but it also rearranges the stress around it. We’re looking into which faults might get more and others that might get less.”

Aftershocks from the M7.2 Baja quake are declining in ‘textbook’ fashion, according to Dr. Hutton.

“People in the Ocotillo and Mexicali areas are still feeling aftershocks, but not in San Diego.”

Among the latest aftershocks were a pair of M4.7 Thursday.

California authorities estimate damage on this side of the border from the Easter earthquake at $91 million. (INT)
