Fee may ease railroad crossing delays
SAN GABRIEL--Members of the San Bernardino Associated Governments joined other transportation officials from Southern California and air advocates at a press conference Tuesday.

They urged Governor Schwarzenegger and the legislature to enact a landmark cargo container fee law.

If approved, it would raise approximately $500 million a year. Revenues would be evenly split between air quality improvements and capital projects to alleviate freight congestion.

Proponents say the $30 fee per-20 ft. container will offset the traffic congestion and air pollution costs of goods movement and will fairly place the cost of accommodating trade on those who directly benefit from it.

If passed by the assembly Monday, the legislation will be sent to Governor Schwarzenegger for signature by July 13.
