Would-be robber slain, identified
JURUPA VALLEY – (INT) – A would-be robber slain in a weekend confrontation with a sheriff’s deputy has been identified.

Lawmen had responded to an attempted robbery on Pacific Avenue. Alex Ayala, 53, of Fontana suddenly ran from the scene.

When the brief foot chase ended, the Ayala said he had a gun and threatened to use it. A deputy fired his own gun fatally wounding the man. Ayala died later at Riverside Community Hospital.

Investigators would not say if Ayala was, in fact, armed with any kind of dangerous weapon.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
