California Shakeout reverberates internationally
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – California’s 5th annual Great Shakeout earthquake drill strikes Thursday.

Mike Blanpied of the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program says the exercise has expanded to the southeast states after last year’s Virginia quake, and has gone internationjally.

“People in 14 states and territories and some foreign countries are going to practice how to dunk, cover and hold on during an earthquake.”

Mark Benthien at the Southern California Earthquake Center says many people outside California have never experienced an earthquake.

“People in other parts of the world have had that experience. They need to, at least, have an annual chance of hearing and practicing what to do and developing that ‘muscle memory.’

Nine million people, many at local schools, have registered to take part in Thursday’s Shakeout at 10:18am.
