Recall petitions against MoVal mayor qualify
MORENO VALLEY – (INT) – The attempted recall of Mayor Tom Owings will go to the ballot box.

County election officials certified Thursday that there were more than enough signatures on the petitions to bring the recall before the voters.

Owings has steadfastly blamed the city’s corruption issues on previous officials. Last summer, he testified during a Grand Jury probe.

A second recall attempt against Councilwoman Victoria Baca was launched earlier this month. Similar efforts naming other council members did not get out of the petition stage.

Owings, who is an elected member of the City Council, was reappointed mayor earlier this month.

An election will now be called. A simple majority of all votes cast will determine if he is removed from the council.

The County Registrar of Voters reported late Thursday that of the 5,632 signatures on the Owings recall petitions, 4,452 were valid. Only 3,544 were required.
