6-year-old cell phone law having little effect
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – Final figures are in and 55,000 more California motorists have been caught while texting or using handheld cell phones.

The law has been on the books for 6-years. But, the California Highway Patrol’s Mario Lopez in San Bernardino says it’s not having an impact.

“The numbers are still going up among drivers who use cell phones while they drive.”

April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month. April’s citations were still much higher than the average month, when about 33,000 cell phone violations are seen.

The rate of motorists either manipulating or talking on a cell phone, handheld or hands free, at any one time is 6.6 percent.
