Lightning strikes emphasize beach safety
VENICE BEACH - (INT) – Sunday’s lightning strike came without warning, and some are asking if lifeguards should take on that responsibility.

A flagging system for water conditions has long been in place. But when Mother Nature strikes from above, it’s every swimmer’s responsibility to take heed.

Los Angeles Fire Captain Brian Jones offers this advice.

“The rules on the beach about weather safety are to pay attention to the weather and make your decisions on what you need to do. We can’t force people. It’s a public beach. Everybody understands the rules and regulations about the public property.”

Sunday’s phenomenon was known as ‘bolt lightning’ which can happen on the edge of thunderstorms even when it’s not raining.

Thirteen people were hurt, one fatally, when it struck the water near the Venice Pier.
