$2.5 million settles lawsuit over student's death
SAN BERNARDINO - (INT) – Cal State University Trustees have agreed to settle a lawsuit stemming from the death of a graduate student at the hands of police.

Bart Williams, 38, died in a confrontation with campus police at a dorm near Cal State San Bernardino in 2012. Williams suffered from a bipolar disorder and had been creating a disturbance.

In their lawsuit, Williams’ parents claimed unreasonable use of deadly force, civil rights violations, disability discrimination, wrongful death, and negligence.

The trustees agreed to a $2.5 million settlement.

Cal State police will revise their crisis intervention policies and require that all officers complete a minimum of 32 hours of Crisis Intervention Training.
