Would-be law prohibits sterilization of female inmates
SACRAMENTO – (INT) - Legislation has been sent to Governor Brown that prohibits forced or coerced sterilizations in prisons.

The bill is in response to media reports of unlawful and coercive sterilization of female inmates at the Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women.

The bill’s author is Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson.

“This is a terrible legacy for California. This bill will protect those women who are incarcerated from forced into being sterilized.”

The pending law will prohibit sterilizations in correctional facilities for the purposes of birth control.
