Hemet to abolish fire department, contract with Calfire
HEMET – (INT) – Consolidation of police and fire departments in the Inland Empire to save on costs has claimed the city’s 106-year-old fire department.

The City Council voted late Tuesday night to turn the city’s fire protection over to Calfire and the Riverside County Fire Department. The 3-2 vote favored a 5-year agreement proposed by City Manager Wally Hill.

The decision capped the proposal first set forth last year and opposed by the Hemet Fire Fighters Association.

Hill estimated it would save the city about $22 million.

A similar proposal is being discussed in cash-strapped San Bernardino.

It follows the closure of municipal police departments including the one in Perris which became a ‘contract city’ with the county sheriff’s department.
