Calfire: More summer wildfires, but smaller
INLAND EMPIRE - (INT) - Wildfires across the Inland Empire this summer have burned far few acres than last year. But, fire activity – statewide – is more active.

Drought conditions coupled with high temperatures and low humidity have allowed several new large wildfires to grow quickly. Currently, nearly 6,000 firefighters are battling 11 major wildfires burning in California. Many have threatened homes forcing hundreds to evacuate.

Already this year, CAL FIRE has responded to over 4,800 wildfires, which is about 1,000 more than in an average year. In total this year’s wildfires have charred over 87,000 acres.

In San Bernardino County, Calfire’s Captain Elizabeth Brown says more manpower has enabled them to stomp out fires more quickly.

“The Governor has given us increased staffing to combat those fires. We’ve been able to attack those fires and keep them at smaller acreages.”

A Red Flag Warning for high fire danger remains in effect through Tuesday evening for the mountains and foothills of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties due to hot temperatures and low humidity.
