Sheriff: Jail recidivism takes remarkable drop
RIVERSIDE – (INT) – State prison reform implemented three years ago has one bright spot.

Although county jails have been overloaded, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon says recidivism has taken a remarkable drop.

“The rate is down in the mid 40 percent range. That’s significant when compared to what it was at the state level when it was nearly 70 percent. If we can get folks sentenced to county jails and have a ‘split sentence’, we can continue that progress, once they are released, keep them in the programming that they need, we can continue to drive recidivism down.”

Sheriff McMahon warned that “If we don’t make changes in dealing with inmates when they are released, we’ll be talking about over-crowding in jails for years to come.”

The sheriff made those remarks to a joint meeting of the San Bernardino and Riverside County Supervisors this week.
