Report: Movers seek more space, better housing
SANTA ANA - (INT) - There are plenty of reasons why people move, but when it comes to migration patterns, a U.S. Census report found more people move out of Los Angeles and into Orange County than any other place in California.

The Census Bureau released its report analyzing where people moved between 2008 and 2012. The study found, on average, more than 40,000 people a year moved from Los Angeles to Orange County. About 38,500 moved from Los Angeles to San Bernardino County, and about 25,500 moved to Riverside County.

The study showed the overall number of people who moved from Orange County to Los Angeles was lower overall, at nearly 32,000. But because Orange County is smaller, the rate of movement was considerably higher.

Jed Kolko, chief economist at Trulia, in a recent blog for the real estate website, found 49 percent of all moves are less than 100 miles. The Los Angeles-to-Orange County move ranks No. 1 as Trulia’s top between-county moves.

“Short-distance moves tend to be for housing reasons – better or cheaper housing,” Kolko said. “That’s a lot easier to do when you’re moving inland than the other way around. That’s not just true in Southern California but nationally.”

Americans have been moving less, of late, than they did in the decades after World War II. (Source: Orange County Register)
