City funding veto may face override, litigation
RIVERSIDE – (INT) – An override of Governor Brown’s veto that denied $19 million to Riverside County’s four newest cities may be attempted.

County Supervisor Jeff Stone has also raised the threat of litigation.

“I know enough about law to be dangerous. I believe there’s a breech of contract here. I believe we have a strong case. There are millions of dollars at stake for this county because we made significant loans to these cities in anticipation that the governor would do the right thing.”

Stone said the veto ‘smells of political stench’ especially when the funding bill passed both the Senate and Assembly.

In his veto message, Brown said “I do not believe that it would be prudent to authorize legislation that would result in long term costs to the (state’s) general fund.”

The revenue to the cities would have come from the state’s Vehicle License Fee.

County supervisors will discuss the possibility of litigation October 21st.
