Scorecard gives children lower marks
INLAND EMPIRE – (INT) – About one-fourth of all children in Riverside and San Bernardino counties live in poverty.

In its annual scorecard issued Wednesday, ‘Children Now’ said that only 41 percent of families in San Bernardino County can afford basic living expenses. It’s slightly over one-half in Riverside County.

Less than 10 percent of low-income students have access to a state-funded after-school program.

‘Children Now’ also found fewer 3-and-4 year olds attending pre-school and fewer third graders who can read at grade level.

About 60 percent of the Inland Empire’s 1.2 million children are Latino.
