Children perish in apartment fire
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – Investigators say that living conditions could have contributed to a fire that killed two children and seriously burned their father.

Police Lt. Richard Lawhead says their apartment on West 14th Street had been inspected earlier this month.

“The people living there were there illegally. The electricity, water and gas had been turned off. But, they had activated that again through illegal means.”

Firemen found Candra Leetch and her 2-year-old brother, Saul, unconscious from smoke inhalation behind a couch where they had, apparently, sought refuge from the early Thursday morning fire.

Fire detectors were not working.

The cause of the fire is still not determined.

Meantime, their mother is reportedly hospitalized and about to give birth. She was not injured.
