UC Regents approve tuition increase SAN FRANCISCO – (INT) – A tuition increase up to 28 percent spread over 5-years is coming for students at the University of California. That’s the decision Thursday of the UC Regents.
UC President Janet Napolitano had the support of most chancellors including Kim Wilcox at UC Riverside. President Napolitano had sought more money from the state and challenged Governor Jerry Brown. Brown opposed the increase and called for a special committee that could identify cost-cutting measures. “Because it’s so hard to make change in complex institutions, oftentimes the pressure of not having enough money can force creativity.” By 2019, UC undergraduates would pay an annual tuition of just over $15,500 compared to the current fee of about $12,000. Student protestors said they won’t be silenced and vowed to continue their opposition. Story Date: November 23, 2014
