Earthquake warning system gets funding
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – A concept developed several years ago for an earthquake early warning system is gaining traction.

The federal government has forked over $5 million to begin placing sensors along segments of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults.

Congressman Adam Schiff says it’s only a start toward funding and operating a statewide system.

“The annual operating costs are around $16 million. It will require up to $32 million to fully build-out the system.”

The system would give Californians a few seconds to brace in advance of shaking from an earthquake. That would be enough time for surgeons to stop a delicate procedure, trains to brake, gas lines could be shut off and elevators stopped.
