Metrolink implements 'Positive Train Control' technology
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) - Metrolink launched the life-saving rail safety technology known as Positive Train Control (PTC) Monday.

It will be applied to Metrolink’s busiest line between San Bernardino and Los Angeles.

PTC monitors and controls train movement in the event of human error.

Specifically, PTC involves a complex GPS-based technology capable of preventing train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, unauthorized incursion into work zones and train movement through switches left in the wrong position.

PTC may also bring trains to a safe stop in the event of a natural disaster such as an earthquake.

The estimated cost for developing, installing and deploying PTC on the Metrolink system is expected to be $216.3 million.

Metrolink aims to become the nation's first passenger rail system to have a fully implemented, interoperable PTC system.
