Southern California cities lead nation on EPA’s Energy Star
LOS ANGELES - (INT) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released Wednesday its seventh-annual list of the top 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings in 2014.

DC has the most Energy Star buildings of any city in the U.S.; followed by Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York. San Diego ranks 17th and Riverside ranks 14th.

“Cities across Southern California have saved more than $196 million and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 400,215 tons because of energy efficient buildings and upgrades,” said Jared Blumenfeld, Regional Administrator for the EPA’s Pacific Southwest office.

More than 25,000 buildings across America have earned EPA’s Energy Star certification since 1999. Los Angeles has reduced carbon emissions by 321,139 metric tons while San Diego and Riverside have reduced 48, 255 and 30,821, respectively.

Energy use in commercial buildings accounts for 17 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of more than $100 billion per year. Energy Star upgrades have saved Los Angeles over $155 million, San Diego over $22 million and Riverside over $19 million.
