'Avengers' scores second-best movie opening ever
HOLLYWOOD - When the Avengers assemble, audiences follow suit.

Disney/Marvel kicked off the summer movie season with 'Avengers: Age of Ultron', which scored the second-biggest North American opening ever with $187.7 million, according to studio estimates from ticket-sales firm Rentrak.

The superhero sequel is only bested by its predecessor 'The Avengers', which still holds the record for an opening weekend in May 2012.

The rest of the week's offerings ate 'Ultron's' dust.

The Blake Lively file 'The Age of Adaline' placed No. 2.

Four-week box office champ 'Furious 7' finished No. 3. Its worldwide ticket sales have eclipsed $1.4 billion.

Rounding out the top five: Kevin James as 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' and the animated alien tale 'Home'. (Source: USA Today)
