Beach tar ball clean-up continues
MANHATTAN BEACH - Beach cleanup is expected to continue into next week as authorities attempt to identify the tar patties that washed up on some beaches.

They ranged from the size of golf balls to footballs. Their source is not known. Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo beaches remained closed Friday morning, two days after the blobs floated onto a six-mile stretch of coastline.

"We've made significant progress on the shoreline, and that's where the bulk of the tar balls have been found," said Commander Charlene Downey, of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Authorities will try to pinpoint whether the globs been processed by a company or naturally occurred. The waste is also being collected so the cost of the clean up can be calculated, and if anyone is found responsible they will be billed. (Source: NBC)
