Canyon Lake invokes mutual aid for fire protection
CANYON LAKE – (INT) - Riverside County Board of Supervisors have unanimously approved a new one-year contract to provide fire services and emergency medical services in the City of Canyon Lake. But, it has not been accepted by the city.

The City Council declared a local state of emergency after a contract with Riverside County expired at midnight Tuesday.

Under the state of emergency, the city is relying on a long-standing mutual aid agreement for its fire protection.

Earlier, a Superior Court judge denied a request that would have forced Riverside County to continue providing fire services in Canyon Lake, even after the old contract expired.

Canyon Lake had contracted with the county for fire protection but not paid $1.9 million its owes over the past 18 months. The costs are the subject of litigation between the city and the county.

Canyon Lake is considering establishing a fire department of its own and has hired former Calfire battalion chief Michael Wilson as interim fire chief.

Canyon Lake was among 21 cities and agencies that contract with the county for fire and paramedic services as part of a regional fire system.
