Cooling centers available as temperatures rise
PALM SPRINGS – (INT) - Cooling centers are available as a way to protect residents from excessive heat. The centers are available at no cost and provide a break from the sometimes triple-digit temperatures that can bake the region.

A heat advisory is in effect today in the Coachella Valley, where temperatures are expected to rise between 112 and 115 degrees.

High temperatures can be hazardous for many people, especially for the elderly and those with medical conditions. Heat-related injuries such as heatstroke, an illness that occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature, can strike fast and pose life-threatening consequences.

In Palm Springs, the cooling centers and their hours of operation are:

James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center, 480 Tramview Road, Palm Springs; 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

The Well in the Desert, 1281 N. Gene Autry Trail, Suite O, Palm Springs; 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
