Another Mt. Baldy hiker dies, trails closed
MOUNT BALDY – (INT) – One of 12 hikers rescued Saturday from ice-covered trails leading up to the 10,000 foot high peak is dead.

The coroner says that Dong Xing Liu, also known as Tony Liu, was hiking near Icehouse Saddle with his wife when both slipped and fell. Liu, 47, of Temple City, was fatally injured but his wife survived. Liu was dead by the time sheriff’s helicopter medics reached his body Saturday night.

It was the second, fatal accident on the mountain in less than a week.

A young Westminster man was killed earlier when he slipped and fell 1,500 feet from Devil’s Backbone, a narrow ridge, just below the peak. He’d been trying to help another hiker who’d also fallen.

Authorities say the hikers were not equipped to walk the trails that have become ice-covered because of melting snow.

Trails leading up to Mt. Baldy were closed Sunday due to treacherous conditions.
