Desert monuments draw praise
INLAND EMPIRE - (INT) - There has been widespread support for President Obama's designation of three national monuments in the deserts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

It has come from the Mojave Desert Land Trust which applauded President Obama for his visionary leadership and Senator Dianne Feinstein for her 'foresight and dedication to the preservation of these treasured desert lands'.

The Hispanic Access Foundation declared that the President’s action protects outdoor heritage for future generations. “Latinos have such an important voice in the protection of our public lands, and a critical role to play in encouraging stewardship of our outdoor and cultural heritage,” the Foundation stated.

The Wilderness Society said the protections will safeguard nationally significant historical, cultural, geological and ecological resources.

Congressman Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) opposed the designations because he said the legislative process is still moving forward. "Unlike the legislative process, the Antiquities Act process provides minimal opportunity for public input, provides no funding mechanisms, and leaves us with monuments that lack broad local support," Cook said in a statement Friday.
