Mount Baldy claims third fatality, another survives
MOUNT BALDY – (INT) – There’s been yet another hiking fatality one one of Southern California’s highest peaks.

A San Diego man has slipped and fallen from Devil’s Backbone, a narrow ridge just below Mount Baldy.

The San Bernardino County coroner says the 45-year-old hiker fell about 1,000 feet to his death. Another hiker called 911 Saturday afternoon to report the incident.

It’s the same trail where another victim died earlier this month.

The weekend mishap was the third fatality on the steep, icy slopes of 10,000 foot high Mount Baldy in recent days.

In another incident, a woman hiking near Icehouse Saddle Sunday fell and had to be rescued.

Trails in the area had been closed for four days earlier this month because of the icy trails, but then reopened. Much of the snow left by recent storms is melting during the day, and freezing at night.
