Climate: El Nino giving way to La Nina SOUTHLAND – (INT) – As the much-hyped El Nino fades, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has posted the year’s first La Nina Watch.
El Nino rains skipped Southern California and now its drier counterpart will move toward center stage. Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are cooling, but have remained above 5-degrees above average along the Southern California coast throughout the winter. In its monthly outlook, the CPC says nearly all forecast models predict further weakening of El Niño, with a transition to the chance of a drier La Niña during the late summer or early fall. The outlook did not indicate what impact the change might have on Southern California’s summertime monsoon season. Story Date: May 12, 2016
