Prison reform put 'bad actors' on San Bernardino streets, mayor says
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – Mayor Carey Davis says the city’s bankruptcy recovery plan includes additional resources to provide an adequate level of police protection.

Davis’ statement comes as the level of street violence escalates. Nine people were murdered during April and gang members have ambushed police officers.

Mayor Davis says he stands by Police Chief Jarrod Burguan and his officers and added that protecting the community is a top priority.

The police have implemented retaliation protocol, aimed at stopping the cycle of retaliation stemming from the shootings. “Officer schedules have been adjusted to maximize deployment efforts to reduce or end the violent spike in our community,” Davis said. The police department is also collaborating with the county sheriff’s department.

Davis also noted that the realignment of state prisons put more offenders back on the streets. “That has increased numbers of bad actors on San Bernardino streets instead of imprisoned,” he said.
