Fire prevention fee may get transparency SACRAMENTO – (INT) – State lawmakers have come to bat for property owners puzzled by the use of money generated by a controversial Calfire fire prevention fee.
CalFire is already required to submit to the Legislature an annual expenditures report. But, a bill passed by the State Senate Monday demands more detail including an itemized accounting of expenditures related to equipment and positions. The annual fee of about $115 applies to property in unincorporated areas of the state where Calfire provides fire protection. It was enacted in 2011 and has survived several attempts to overturn it. Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) has said “While I believe is an illegal tax - this bill brings added transparency to the program and ensures that the public has access to this information in the years ahead."
