LOS ANGELES-- The city of Los Angeles will host Super Bowl LV in 2021, the National Football League announced Tuesday.

The newly relocated Los Angeles Rams are building a stadium in Inglewood that will be the site of the February 2021 event. The stadium is expected to open in 2019.

The Super Bowl will be in Atlanta in 2019, and in South Florida in 2020, the NFL also announced.

Team owners were meeting in North Carolina and future Super Bowl sites were among the items being discussed.

“We are honored that the NFL is bringing the Super Bowl to Los Angeles in 2021. The League’s selection of Los Angeles is a testament to its commitment to innovation and diversity, and I couldn’t be prouder of our winning bid,” said Casey Wasserman, who delivered L.A.'s bid to the 32 team owners. “Stan Kroenke's vision for the Rams stadium and the surrounding campus makes Inglewood an ideal venue for staging the Super Bowl of the future, and we look forward to inviting the nation and the world to L.A. for an historic fan experience."

Wasserman's comments came in a statement released by the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board. The Rams' chief operating officer said the team welcomed the chance to host the nation's biggest sporting event.

Mayor Eric Garcetti noted in the statement that L.A. was the first Super Bowl host back in 1967, when the game was played at Memorial Coliseum.

"Los Angeles is built to host the Super Bowl," Garcetti said. "Now, at long last, we're bringing it back where it belongs."

Inglewood Mayor James Butts told KTLA that the new stadium and the Super Bowl will draw more people to his city.

“When the league let the Rams relocate to Inglewood, California for the Los Angeles market, we became a national city. With the announcement of the awarding of the Super Bowl here… we became an international city,” Butts said. “It doesn’t get any better than that.”

He added, “This singular event will draw more people to the city over a week’s time than we’ve ever had here,” including the three Laker championships that were played at the Forum in Inglewood.
