Street gangs interrupted in major law enforcement sweep
CORONA – (INT) – Two street gangs active in the Corona area have been broken up in a major law enforcement operation.

Fifty-two people have been arrested and a large quantity of firearms and drugs with a street value of $1.6 million seized.

More than 300 law enforcement officers had their sights set on the Corona Varrio Locos. Those gang members are affiliated with the Sureños, a Southern California regional street gang that vows allegiance to the Mexican Mafia.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) assisted with the investigation of the gangs’ trafficking in illegal firearms and narcotics, conducting cell searches within California state prisons.

The arrests and seizures announced Thursday “will no doubt disrupt the criminal gangs’ enterprise, thus making our communities that much safer,” said Corona Police Chief Michael Abel.

Authorities said the gangs were involved in criminal activities throughout Riverside County.
