Motel fire origin found, but cause is elusive
SAN BERNARDINO – (INT) – Investigators have determined the point of origin of last Thursday night’s fire that roared through the Super 8 Motel in the Hospitality Lane area.

It started in some weeds and brush adjacent to the westbound I-10 on-ramp from Waterman Avenue.

Blowing embers quickly spread, igniting nearby palm trees and extending into parked vehicles and two buildings at the motel.

The cause of the initial fire remains under investigation.

All the guests in forty-two rooms safely evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

Fifteen fire trucks and crews responded containing the flames and spending the rest of the night mopping up.

The blaze was first major one in the city since fire protection was handed over to the county July 1st. The bankrupt city had operated its own fire department for 137 years.
