Three killed in police confrontations identified
SAN BERNARDINO - (INT) – Drugs and/or mental illness have figured in a man’s fatal shooting by police.

According to a police account, a passing motorist advised an officer of a man acting suspicious on North Mt. Vern on Avenue early Wednesday.

When the officer confronted Saddam Trejeda-Campos, 24, the San Bernardino man charged the officer with a hunting knife. In spite of commands to drop the knife, Campos refused and was shot twice. He died later at a hospital.

The incident brought to five the number of people killed in officer-involved shootings in the Inland Empire this month.

Last weekend, a Chino police officer had responded to a shopping center on Central Avenue after a woman reported a suspicious man with a gun in his car.

An officer confronted Bernard Wells III setting off a foot chase that ended in an adjoining shopping center when Wells pointed a gun at another officer and was fatally shot.

Wells, from San Diego, had an extensive criminal history and warrants for his arrest.
