Aftermath of Blue Cut Fire poses health risks
CAJON PASS – (INT) – A host of health and safety issues remain in the wake of the Blue Cut Fire.

Damage to wells and septic systems may be a result of flames, smoke, ash, power outages or equipment failure due to fire damage. If a well has become contaminated, drinking water must be tested for bacteria by a certified laboratory. Water should not be used for drinking or cooking purposes unless it has been boiled or disinfected.

San Bernardino County Environmental Health Services says food exposed to fire can be compromised by the heat of the fire, smoke fumes, and chemicals used to fight fire. Saving food that’s been in a fire is not a good idea.

County Health Officer Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare voiced concern about cleaning up ash from the wildfires. The ash is relatively non-toxic. However, the ash will contain small amounts of hazardous chemicals that may cause various health risks.
