Chase suspect dies, investigation clogs I-15
CAJON PASS - A man suspected of shooting an officer in Huntington Beach before leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit was killed in a fiery crash in the Cajon Pass Friday morning.

The resulting investigation gridlocked the I-15, backing up northbound traffic 17-miles Friday afternoon.

The incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence call in Huntington Beach, Officer Jennifer Marlatt with the Huntington Beach Police Department told KTLA television.

Officers attempted to contact a man involved in the incident when he got into a vehicle and sped off, Marlatt said.

At one point the man made a U-turn and then fired several rounds at officers. One round struck an officer's badge, but was repelled.

The pursuit through three counties continued at speeds over 100 mph. The get-away driver later lost control on Interstate 15 and crashed his car near Cleghorn Road in the Cajon Pass.

Video showed the car erupting in flames soon after crashing. The driver and sole occupant died, Marlatt said.
