Currency smugglers caught with record cash
ESCONDIDO – (INT) – The Border Patrol has scored its largest currency seizure ever in San Diego County.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of transporting more than $3 million in two vehicles.

A ‘sniffer’ dog alerted officers after one vehicle was stopped. Another sped away but it was later found abandoned and its driver hiding in some bushes.

Eight vacuum-sealed bundles containing $33,880 that was stashed in the center console of one vehicle. Another $3,018,000 was found inside eight boxes in the trunk of the second vehicle.

Both drivers, a 53-year-old U.S. citizen and a 41-year-old Mexican National, were arrested. They were turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and are facing federal charges for currency smuggling.

The Border Patrol, routinely, does not release the names of arrested individuals pending a thorough investigation.
