Crash ends F-18 training flight
TWENTYNINE PALMS - (INT) - For the second time in three months, an F-18 has crashed and burned at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

A San Bernardino County Fire Department spokesman said the pilot safely ejected.

The Marine Corps Times reported the pilot suffered no serious injuries.

Earlier this summer, an F/A-18C crashed during a late night training mission. The pilot, Maj. Richard Norton, 36, of Arcadia was killed. He was attached to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Miramar near San Diego.

In 2008, an F-18 crashed into three homes in San Diego. Four people perished. The pilot told several people at the scene that he lost an engine during a training flight. He tried to return to his base at Miramar, but lost the second engine shortly before the accident. An investigation showed the crash probably was caused by a power failure and not structural problems with the F-18.
