Survey: College affordability a big problem
SAN FRANCISCO – (INT) – A new survey confirms what many Californians have long suspected.

The state’s public higher education system get high marks, but most see affordability as a big problem.

Most told the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) that higher education funding is inadequate but also believe that existing funds need to be used more wisely. While nearly all see the system as important to the state’s future, Californians are divided on whether a college education is necessary for individual success in today’s economy.

While most Californians see cost as an obstacle to getting a college education, there are differences of opinion about the accessibility of loans and financial aid.

Asked how prepared students are for college-level work, a strong majority of adults (67%) say that many students require basic skills and remedial education.

Nearly all of those surveyed say the state’s higher education system is important (77% very, 19% somewhat) to the quality of life and economic vitality of the state over the next 20 years.

The findings were based on a survey of 1,711 California adult residents via telephone landline or on cellphones.
