Judge accepts guilty plea in terrorist attack
RIVERSIDE – (INT) – An accused co-conspirator in the December 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday.
Enriquez Marquez, Jr., 25, had signed a plea agreement for making false statements over his purchase of two assault rifles that he supplied to Syed Rizwan Farook to carry out the attack at the Inland Regional Center (IRC) in which 14 people died.
Marquez is also admitting that he supplied weapons and explosives to Farook while planning earlier attacks at Riverside City College and on the 91 freeway that were not executed. But, US Attorney Eileen Decker said that planning ‘clearly laid the foundation’ for the San Bernardino massacre.
Marquez has been in custody since shortly after the ICR attack perpetrated by Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, who were killed the same day in a police shootout.
Marquez is facing a statutory maximum sentence of 25 years in federal prison when he is sentenced August 21st.
In a separate investigation, three people have pleaded guilty in a sham marriage in which a Russian woman ‘married’ Marquez to obtain immigration benefits. Each is awaiting sentencing.
