Gunman perishes in flaming house
RIVERSIDE - (INT) – A man suspected of exchanging gunfire with police and died in a home where he’d barricaded himself has been identified.

The incident came to a climax early Tuesday when police fired a flash-bang device into the house on Sage Avenue in an effort to force Marcelino Garcia to surrender. Instead, the house caught fire. The 39-year-old Perris man was later found in the rubble.

Police had surrounded the house late Monday night after the shootout and waited 9-hours before taking decisive action.

Firefighters in bulletproof vests and wearing helmets prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes. Four hours later, the flames were declared under control. Damage to the burning house was extensive.

No officers or firefighters were injured.

Five other occupants of the house fled to safety.
