Debut of next El Nino predicted
SOUTHLAND – (INT) – The Climate Prediction Center forsees increasing chances of the next El Nino by the end of the year.
In their latest outlook, the climatologists are calling for a 50-50 chance of a developing El Nino by late summer or early fall and continuing into December.
Meantime, La Nina which has ruled the past several months as faded. Sea surface temperatures across the central equatorial Pacific are near-average. That has put the so-called Southern Oscillation Index near average which is expected to remain over the coming three months.
The Climate Prediction Center noted, however, that half of its computer models showed an onset of El Nino before June.
El Nino has been known to enhance rainfall across California. But, drought-busting rains fell this past winter during La Nina.
