Amtrak debuts diesel-electric locomotives
SACRAMENTO – (INT) – Californians who travel by train are getting their first look at one of the newest locomotives to hit the rails.

The new high-speed, diesel-powered locomotive, dubbed the Charger, will soon be in service on Amtrak California’s Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin passenger lines.

Six new locomotives are the first to comply with the federal EPA’s Tier 4 emissions standards, which reduce emissions by 85 percent. The Charger is equipped with diesel-electric engines designed to operate at speeds of 125 mph.

Each locomotive costs nearly $6 million, and are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Proposition 1B, approved by California voters in 2006.
